Song Choice
Our group has decided to do Pelican by The Maccabees. This follows our indie genre which we have decided to follow during our research and planning posts. We have chosen this song because it has quite easy lyrics and the narrative of the lyrics is easy to understand, also the Maccabees are a very indie genre band and has the image we want to go for when creating our own music video.
Image Annotation
Our own ideas/twist to the bands image
After thoroughly researching the genre, we have learned that bands that belong to the indie rock genre tend to dress quite casually, with a modern twist. This is incredibly useful to us, as we can easily attain these items of clothing and therefore can replicate the Indie image. An extremely common visual element associated with the majority of Indie bands would be skinny/drain pipe jeans, therefore we will definitely include this in the performance elements of our music video.
While researching Indie fashion we also discovered that denim is a common feature of popular Indie Group's attire. This also conforms to the casual Indie look, as the faded denim gives this "worn/faded" appearance that matches our initial ideas. They are also incredibly affordable, and easy to attain. The other image shows perhaps a more sophisticated look, although it can also enhance the "worn" image. We are considering using a similar item as many ambient Indie Groups feature them and it conveys what we wish to represent.
The images below show footwear that we believe helps us as an audience distinguish a band as being part of the Indie Rock genre. This is incredibly practical as I actually possess a pair of Desert boots, and a pair of brown loafers can be easily attained. This combined with the previous elements would suggest to the audience that we are from the Indie genre, and that is obviously what we wish to convey.
The instruments below are typical instruments used by Indie Rock musicians, especially the Fender Telecaster. The implementation of hollow body guitars also adds an elegant look that conforms to the relatively smart attire of the band members. This is again incredibly practical as I own both of these particular models; and will distribute them to the band members during the filming stages. I feel that all of these elements will easily help us achieve the casual/smart Indie appearance we originally aimed to achieve.

Analysis of Tellison - Edith
Tellison music video, Edith follows a narrative about a cat that has died related to the main character. The band are shown throughout the video quite plainly in plain white suits and ties performing for their audience which follows a typical convention of an indie/alternative rock music video. The main character in the blue superhero mask (top left) is wrestling people to try and win the trophy to make his cat proud. This narrative of the music video is quite random and doesn't always make sense throughout but the audience can find this quite humourous when he is fighting the different people and when he looks at the cat picturre (bottom right). Comparing this to a video like The Wombats or Mumford and Sons, The Cave video, this Tellison music video seems quite strange and unique and is set in one particular location unlike The Cave which involves the band travelling around on mopeds. The facial expressions from the band shows the audience that they are involved in the fight and are there with them so they aren't just performing as a band they are individual characters. Constant close ups of the instruments such as the guitars and drums shows the audience that they are real and what to show them what talent they have. Also long shots are used at the beginning and at the end of the video to show the similarites between the progress in time of the video and how they all compare to each other as one band. Before the video ends there is a mid shot of a shrine in which the main character has created for his cat, even though the lyrics may be talking about a girl it shows the change in meaning which the lyrics can hold and shows the main character as an obsession with his cat, Edith. Tellison Edith, links with the indie genre because Tellison aren't as well known as other bands such as Two Door Cinema Club, Mumford and Sons etc. This is because indie bands are mainly independent which is the reason why their work is so unique and different from pop music and rock music. Putting it inbetween these two genres shows the audience how different they are and how they represent themselves as a band or artist as becoming a different genre by the conventions they follow.
Record Label Research
Rough Trade are a British Indie record label who were first discovered in 1978 by a man called Geoff Travis who founded the label company in his old Notting Hill record shop. This record label produced bands such as The Smiths, The Fall, and Stiff Little Fingers. Stiff Little Fingers was the first album to be released by Rough Trade records and sold over 100,000 copies worldwide. However, soon after this success the label went bust in 1991, losing a full decade but soon after relaunched back in 2000. Travis, the founder of the company found a small band in New York called The Strokes. The parent company of Rough Trade is now called Beggars Group, although Rough Trade creates bands today like Anthony and The Johnsons. Rough Trade Records base themselves in Greater London and some Rough Trade shops are scattered around the City Of London near Notting Hill and Waterloo. I think this label would be best for our band because it links more to indie bands and quite independent bands just like The Maccabees.
Creation Records are a British label company who created some of the most well known famous bands in society today. It was founded in 1983 and from 1983 to 1999 the company had created the most amazing indie/alternative rock music of all time. As most record label companys attract signings with good deals, Creation sign bands with a 'rock and roll' image related to sex, drink and drugs. Oasis was one of their biggest successes as well as Primal Scream who sold thousands neck and neck throughout their labelling years. Hoever, creation records was very successful when Oasis arrived but the founder Allan Mcgee couldn't keep a decent profit to keep it alive.
Daniel Miller (above) established the most one of the UK's biggest independent labels when he released a single in 1978. The single which happened to be a success had Millers address written on the back in which hopeful musicians sent him demos of their own work. He decided off his own back to release some of these songs and they became very successful. For example, Erasure are now a very well known and successful group still going on today also Goldfrapp was one of the lucky ones to have their single being released by a very successful British company. Mute companys are based in and around the City of London included Fulham and Kingston upon Thames.

Analyse 3 Indie/Alternative Rock CD Covers
Analyse 3 Indie CD Covers on Prezi
In all three CD covers I have chosen i feel that they all link within our chosen indie genre because my first CD cover from Two Door Cinema Club links with The Maccabees because they are quite similar in a sense of their music and voice. Their work is also quite random and unique just like a typical indie video. Coldplay's Paradise CD cover reflects the image which indie bands and artists intend to carry with the bright colours and random pictures of things which may or may not reflect their personalities or their work. Lastly, the Kings Of Leons album cover of the bulb smashing suggests the rebellion which they have and this links with rebellion that indie artists use when they are creating their image for their specific target audience.

Analysis of Coldplay - Yellow
Coldplay - Yellow on Prezi
Coldplay links to an Indie/Alternative Rock genre because they are well known for being more rock than indie but in this video it follows the typical conventions of an indie rock video with one whole shot and it keeps the audience focused on the lead singer as he is in the middle of the frame throughout. Also the location fits with the indie genre of having it on a beach in the cold weather where most random indie artists feel that its a familiar location and the audience can connect with it more.

Analysis of a pop video 3- Ed Sheeran Legohouse
Analysis of a pop video - Ed Sheeran Legohouse on Prezi
Ed Sheeran links to a pop video because the legohouse video follows a strict narrative based on the singer himself and also a famous star is included as another actor which is quite popular in the pop industry these days. The way the two are presented makes the audience want to follow along and interests them throughout the narrative. The video follows typical conventions such as locations of their gigs and things they own which they can show off. In this case, the tour bus and ed sheerans house.

Analysis of a rock video- Asking Alexandria The Final Episode
The first 25 seconds of the video begins with an out of focus shot following a long track on the floor leading up to a microphone laying messily in the middle of the floor. The low key lighting gives off this representation of a somewhat depressing song or dark song and how the it represents the band itself as being very bold and mysterious. Immediately fast paced editing comes in on each shot before the song even begins. A voiceover of a girl answering a phone call with no one answering gives off this scary feel and the fear in her voice makes the audience feel like the band aren't generally happy people. Extreme close ups and track outs are used on certain strange everyday objects such as light-bulbs and teacups which may suggest that the band are normal and don't want to be represented as 'evil' by their dark video. Slow motion and focus pulls are used to show the band setting up their performance by picking up guitars and the main lead grabbing the microphone off the floor. This could represent their messy lifestyle and maybe how they've left their performance space after a rehearsal. Just before the drummer makes the first beat, there are mid shots and slow motion of them jumping up and down showing the audience that they are ready to perform.
In the second clip when the music fully starts and the main singer begins to sing or 'scream' the audience are thrown out of the quiet gentle slow motion beginning and thrown into the fast edited extreme close ups and long shots of the band performing. Throughout this clip there are extreme close ups of dust flying off of the drums which could connote that they haven't performed in a while and this is the first time they are doing it, or could represent that because they are 'rockstars' they shouldn't care about the mess they make. This also shown through the splashing of the teacup and how the music is making the coffee literally bounce out of the cup and the band almost wants the audience to do the same. There are continuous close ups and mid shots of the band performing and 'rocking out' to their song, this represents them as what the audience want them to be and how they want to see them. Their are slow motion shots of them flicking their hair in time to the music and jumping up and down, almost enjoying their performance
In the third clip, it shows that pretty much throughout the whole music video it repeats itself with the same extreme close ups of the flashing light bulbs which connotes that their music controls the electricity and their music is so powerful it can create anything. Their fully black costumes almost make them look invisible with the low key lighting and dark walls, also because their hair is black it makes it harder for the audience to see their face so this gives off this mysterious look about them and also the colour black represents darkness and an almost empty feeling which the band members give off. The location looks as if they are in an old garage or an old performance space implying that they have no where else to perform or they feel like they relate to dark empty spaces. There is no particular narrative in this music video, the lyrics follow a story about how the girl he loves doesn't love him back but this isn't shown in the music video. It's more of a performance than a story.
In the last clip, it differs from all the other 3 clips because this time he actually sings up close and gives direct address toward the camera. The shots change from extreme close ups to long shots of him miming with the others still performing in the background. This time, the audience can clearly see his face and with the others hidden in the background it makes him stand out the most. When the props of the teacup and light bulbs fall and smash it represents how their life is smashing around them because their lifestyle and stereotypes of a rock band makes them face challenges in their life.

Analysis of a pop video- Justin Bieber Boyfriend
Justin Biebers Boyfriend video links with the typical pop video because it follows the stereotypical aspects of a pop video such as having it in a secluded area surrounded by dancers and girls the same age as him also it follows the mise en scene of a pop video with him wearing the latest fashion and surrounded by cars which shows the audience that he has the amount of money to show off and spash around on flashy things.

Brief
The task I have been given is to work in a group preferably with Ellie, Matthew or Nathan and work together to create a music video of a certain genre such as rock, pop etc. To do this I will have to go through various planning and research by analysing certain music videos to match our own chosen genre and notice the different conventions in a music video and how we can match them in our own. We are also given the task to go away and film our music video outside school using our own ideas and by planning costume, cinematography, mise en scene, editing and performance.
