The Filming Process
Above are the images we have produced of our process during filming and during creating our ancillary task. The snow shots of the two boys compared to the park shots show the development between locations and band members. This pictures also show the different shot types we approached as a group during this period. For example, the high angle shot of Jamie lip syncing up toward the camera compared to the mid shot in the snow shows how we wanted a range of shot types for our music video. The equipment has also developed as you can see in the snow shots we used a tripod and HD camera whereas in the park shot to make it easier we used a fig rig to help track backs and steadier shots when the band are moving toward the camera. In the images of us working on our ancillary we were improving the board by making it more colourful and adding the band name which would later on become our advertisement:
Using certain editing techniques we were able to make the chalkboard look more creative and 'band like' compared to our old advertisement when we merged the bands faces together in a pattern. We have improved the advertisement since this one by changing the font and the positioning of some of the text to make it look more realistic and professional.
Overall, during our construction process of both ancillary and music video task we have improved this and when we reshoot, we will show development in reshooting and equipment.

ancillary progress
Throughout the weeks we have made a huge progress in our ancillary task from the feedback we were given from our teachers. They told us to add more songs and maybe add a little bit the band would say in the blank spaces, we tried this and we think that this looks okay but we may have to work on it a little longer and maybe make them shorter. Adding a band message in will connect with the audience more and make them feel like the band is making the album especially for them. We also added a few more songs and some more important detail underneath explaining the record company including 'The Bandits' official website. We may have to reshoot some of the singular images because Ben and Jamie need to look far ahead and not into the camera so it makes them all look like a band and they are not out of place. The front cover is successful and no feedback has been said for that.

Filming our music video.

The pictures above are images which I took when we were filming on the Monday. Because the weather was so poor we couldn't orginally film in the place we wanted to and another member of our band was missing. The shots above we took from a mid shot of the boys building a snowman and lip syncing along. These shots are a great advantage to our work and we will use them effectively in our music video.

Inspiration for ancillary task.
The triangles and colours for our ancillary task we got from Gotye's video - Somebody that I used to know. The coloured triangles on his face gave us the idea to use this but with brighter colours on the boys bodies for our ancillary and we used the hoodie for Jamie to make him stand out through the two other band members. The chalk heading also links back to the advertisement and the inside of the digi pack as well as the bright colours relating to the chalk. This was our best idea because we feel that it gives off more of a unique image and makes it seem more indie compared to the original ancillary which we had shown.
Showing development on Ancillary.
These pictures are an example of our development for our ancillary task for draft 2. Carrying on with the chalk idea we have taken these pictures of us as a group developing the colours on the chalkboard and adding 'The bandits' to it so we could use it for our advertisement. During the progress we were covered in chalk a numerous amount but we enjoyed drawing images and and writing lyrics and words related to our band and album not forgetting our album name Zoey. We decided to call our album name Zoey because I think from looking at other indie bands, some of them have named their album after a girlfriend, friend, wife or someone they are proud of. We went with this idea to extend our own knowledge and ideas from our original album name 'Pelican',

Development in Ancillary Task
Advertisement
Below, you can see the progress in which our group made throughout our production process of creating the advertisement for our band The Bandits- Zoey. Our original idea which is the yellow background with the mixed faces was okay but we didnt put that much effort into it. We got this inspiration from Kings of Leons album cover in which they put the bands faces together to create this unique and strange look. However, after much umming and ahhing in the group we came up with an idea of using chalk and scribbles in different colours to relate to the bands colourful and unique nature. Our new advertisement which is the other image with bright colours is a better idea and links well with our album cover below and how we used these colours to represent each member of the band.
Digi-Pack
Looking at the development between our CD digi pack and our advertisement put together, we have related the chalk and bright colours by using the boys faces to paint aztec looking shapes on them. With Jamie being in the middle in a bright green hoodie, the audience can see that he is the main character in the band and the other two are drum and bass players. In contrast to our original idea of using the hands on a colourful card background, we have still used the idea of colours but instead of paper, transfered it to a chalkboard. The back of the album cover is related to a chalkboard with the song list and the bands faces represent the importance of them and how jamie is looking into the camera and the others aren't.Friday, 11 January 2013

Draft 1 - Ancillary.
This was our draft 1 of our peer assessment for our ancillary. Our idea we got was from the Kings of Leon album cover and advertisement for 'Only by the Night'. The mixed faces which merge together we thought we could use for our own album cover. At first it was successful when added to the album cover but most of us couldn't get the right idea and when we looked at it, we didn't think 'wow' which is what we all wanted to feel about our own work.
Below is the other two original ideas we had for Draft 1. The written hands and colours were thought through really well and we liked the idea of the bright colours and the idea of the bands body being apart of the album with their face and hands etc. However, once we had these ideas we didn't have much else to do with them. We didn't want to repeat the same coloured card on the inside of the flaps and we didn't want to repeart the band name. In the end, we scrapped this idea and created a better and more successful ancillary for our draft 2.
Development on production
During the post production stages we as a group created ideas for specific shots we would collate during the filming for our performance and narrative elements, we created an animatic containing detailed explanation of each shot and timings to the beat of the music.
After putting some of our ideas into practice during our first day of recording we learned that we would have to adapt and alter some of our previous ideas to make them possible and more practical in preparation for the editing stages.
After putting some of our ideas into practice during our first day of recording we learned that we would have to adapt and alter some of our previous ideas to make them possible and more practical in preparation for the editing stages.
- While in Camden we attempted to film the walking lip sync shot but soon learned that our method of recording other lip-syncing shots (using a phone and playing the song out loud) as the traffic and sounds from the high street were too loud in comparison and I couldn't follow the song. To rectify this I managed to hide a single headphone in one of my ears to ensure I could follow the lyrics whilst moving through the high street.
- We planned to record a performance shot whilst on route to Camden on the train, we soon found this to be quite a far fetched idea as we were among the early morning rush and were unable to even take our instruments out of their cases. We rectified this particular shot by adapting our shot so we would perform at the platform on a bench. Personally i felt this was a nicer overall shot as we had far more space between the three of us, and the overall mise en scene was interesting. The Camden sign above the three of us also added a nice establishing touch.
- The final shot that we struggled with was capturing our river shot in which the three members of the band were supposed to sit with our feet above the river. We discovered that the water was too high, and so we searched for other ways to capture the shot. Eventually we came across a short draw bridge above a waterfall and decided this would look visually appealing and was actually and improvement to our original shot, I and the other members walked across the bridge and sat directly in the middle. The overall result was very pleasing.

Band Name Ideas
The ones highlighted in Blue are the ones that we are choosing between as we want to definitely have a 'The' in front of the band name which follows the conventions and stereotypes of what Indie bands do.

Song Choice
Our group has decided to do Pelican by The Maccabees. This follows our indie genre which we have decided to follow during our research and planning posts. We have chosen this song because it has quite easy lyrics and the narrative of the lyrics is easy to understand, also the Maccabees are a very indie genre band and has the image we want to go for when creating our own music video.
Image Annotation
Our own ideas/twist to the bands image
After thoroughly researching the genre, we have learned that bands that belong to the indie rock genre tend to dress quite casually, with a modern twist. This is incredibly useful to us, as we can easily attain these items of clothing and therefore can replicate the Indie image. An extremely common visual element associated with the majority of Indie bands would be skinny/drain pipe jeans, therefore we will definitely include this in the performance elements of our music video.
While researching Indie fashion we also discovered that denim is a common feature of popular Indie Group's attire. This also conforms to the casual Indie look, as the faded denim gives this "worn/faded" appearance that matches our initial ideas. They are also incredibly affordable, and easy to attain. The other image shows perhaps a more sophisticated look, although it can also enhance the "worn" image. We are considering using a similar item as many ambient Indie Groups feature them and it conveys what we wish to represent.
The images below show footwear that we believe helps us as an audience distinguish a band as being part of the Indie Rock genre. This is incredibly practical as I actually possess a pair of Desert boots, and a pair of brown loafers can be easily attained. This combined with the previous elements would suggest to the audience that we are from the Indie genre, and that is obviously what we wish to convey.
The instruments below are typical instruments used by Indie Rock musicians, especially the Fender Telecaster. The implementation of hollow body guitars also adds an elegant look that conforms to the relatively smart attire of the band members. This is again incredibly practical as I own both of these particular models; and will distribute them to the band members during the filming stages. I feel that all of these elements will easily help us achieve the casual/smart Indie appearance we originally aimed to achieve.
