Draft 1 - Ancillary.

This was our draft 1 of our peer assessment for our ancillary. Our idea we got was from the Kings of Leon album cover and advertisement for 'Only by the Night'. The mixed faces which merge together we thought we could use for our own album cover. At first it was successful when added to the album cover but most of us couldn't get the right idea and when we looked at it, we didn't think 'wow' which is what we all wanted to feel about our own work.

Below is the other two original ideas we had for Draft 1. The written hands and colours were thought through really well and we liked the idea of the bright colours and the idea of the bands body being apart of the album with their face and hands etc. However, once we had these ideas we didn't have much else to do with them. We didn't want to repeat the same coloured card on the inside of the flaps and we didn't want to repeart the band name. In the end, we scrapped this idea and created a better and more successful ancillary for our draft 2.

Development on production

During the post production stages we as a group created ideas for specific shots we would collate during the filming for our performance and narrative elements, we created an animatic containing detailed explanation of each shot and timings to the beat of the music.

After putting some of our ideas into practice during our first day of recording we learned that we would have to adapt and alter some of our previous ideas to make them possible and more practical in preparation for the editing stages.

  • While in Camden we attempted to film the walking lip sync shot but soon learned that our method of recording other lip-syncing shots (using a phone and playing the song out loud) as the traffic and sounds from the high street were too loud in comparison and I couldn't follow the song. To rectify this I managed to hide a single headphone in one of my ears to ensure I could follow the lyrics whilst moving through the high street.

  • We planned to record a performance shot whilst on route to Camden on the train, we soon found this to be quite a far fetched idea as we were among the early morning rush and were unable to even take our instruments out of their cases. We rectified this particular shot by adapting our shot so we would perform at  the platform on a bench. Personally i felt this was a nicer overall shot as we had far more space between the three of us, and the overall mise en scene was interesting. The Camden sign above the three of us also added a nice establishing touch.

  • The final shot that we struggled with was capturing our river shot in which the three members of the band were supposed to sit with our feet above the river. We discovered that the water was too high, and so we searched for other ways to capture the shot. Eventually we came across a short draw bridge above a waterfall and decided this would look visually appealing and was actually and improvement to our original shot, I and the other members walked across the bridge and sat directly in the middle. The overall result was very pleasing.

Song Choice

Our group has decided to do Pelican by The Maccabees. This follows our indie genre which we have decided to follow during our research and planning posts. We have chosen this song because it has quite easy lyrics and the narrative of the lyrics is easy to understand, also the Maccabees are a very indie genre band and has the image we want to go for when creating our own music video.

Our own ideas/twist to the bands image

After thoroughly researching the genre, we have learned that bands that belong to the indie rock genre tend to dress quite casually, with a modern twist. This is incredibly useful to us, as we can easily attain these items of clothing and therefore can replicate the Indie image. An extremely common visual element associated with the majority of Indie bands would be skinny/drain pipe jeans, therefore we will definitely include this in the performance elements of our music video.

While researching Indie fashion we also discovered that denim is a common feature of popular Indie Group's attire. This also conforms to the casual Indie look, as the faded denim gives this "worn/faded" appearance that matches our initial ideas. They are also incredibly affordable, and easy to attain. The other image shows perhaps a more sophisticated look, although it can also enhance the "worn" image. We are considering using a similar item as many ambient Indie Groups feature them and it conveys what we wish to represent.

The images below show footwear that we believe helps us as an audience distinguish a band as being part of the Indie Rock genre. This is incredibly practical as I actually possess a pair of Desert boots, and a pair of brown loafers can be easily attained. This combined with the previous elements would suggest to the audience that we are from the Indie genre, and that is obviously what we wish to convey.

The instruments below are typical instruments used by Indie Rock musicians, especially the Fender Telecaster. The implementation of hollow body guitars also adds an elegant look that conforms to the relatively smart attire of the band members. This is again incredibly practical as I own both of these particular models; and will distribute them to the band members during the filming stages. I feel that all of these elements will easily help us achieve the casual/smart Indie appearance we originally aimed to achieve.
